I actually discovered Rochelle Diamante’s beautiful vocals when she lent her voice to ‘This I Promise You,’ in Michelle Phan’s ‘Underneath Your Love’ video. Rochelle is incredibly talented and this latest original single is so beautiful that I don’t even have a word to describe it (and trust me, me being speechless is a very rare thing ;) )
I still can’t believe
That you really left
Cause even when I’m sleeping
You’re always in my head
I can’t feel my heart
I think it left with you
And deep down inside
I know you love me too
Why do the good things
Have to have an end
I wish we could rewind
And try it all again

The Catastrophic History of You and Me
Jess Rothernberg
Rating: 9/10
“Hell’s not so much a burning, scalding pit of fire and misery. It’s actually much, much worse than that. Hell is when the people you love the most reach right into your soul and rip it out of you. And they do it because they can.”
Ok, I’ll admit it - I was drawn to this book because of its beautiful cover (yeah, yeah I know - don’t judge a book by its cover and whatnot.) Having finished it now, though, I have gained another valuable literary lesson - don’t judge a book by its first chapter.
The Catastrophic History of You and Me was one of the very first e-books I purchased after my parents got me a sony eReader for my birthday. I downloaded the free preview of the first chapter from kobobooks.com and decided this was going to be a funny, light-hearted read that would probably have me giggling myself to sleep. What I got instead was an extremely moving, angsty, beautiful story about the nature of love and trust and how they change. I learnt about sacrifice and how far some people will go to protect their loved ones. It also got me thinking about time and how it affects everything - how it mutes away pain and erases faces and changes you. I learnt all this, and hundreds and hundreds of other lessons that you really would not have expected from a book supposedly about a girl who (literally, I kid you not,) dies from a broken heart.
In a nutshell, the main character, Brie, dies after her heart severs in half and then enters a sort of ‘afterlife’ where she travels back to her hometown - mostly because she’s not ready to say goodbye to her loved ones yet. However, instead of the peaceful place she remembers, what she finds is a whole, messy heap of betrayal and lies, with the people she loved and trusted most right in the middle of it. It’s almost painful to watch her reaction afterwards but throughout the tragedy of it all, Brie’s friendly and always-humorous narration makes for an easy read that well and truly warms the heart.
And I have to say - after The Hunger Games trilogy, this has got to be one of the most quotable books ever! Some really beautiful and thought-provoking lines were shared during this novel and it has now officially earned a very special place in my heart :)

While reading a book today, I was just reminded of how strange it is that there are a lot of people I was good friends with, and only now have I realised that we haven’t spoken in years and I don’t even know where they are or what they’re doing right now. I’m sure this is the case for many of us - so many people walk into and out of our lives that unfortunately, sometimes we don’t even notice when a few of them go missing.
Of course, it’s nearly impossible for us to lose touch with those few special people we truly connect with - but I am intrigued (and a little scared!) of the idea that there might come a day when fate might change the people in our lives into just another face in the crowd.
And when you think about the people around you right now - aside from your family - isn’t it strange that we were all once just Strangers?
